Lakes in the air

When I lived next to the ocean I came to associate large bodies of water with one of two things - either something that's close to the ocean itself, like a lake or a river, or something that's man-made, like a dam.

Water flowed down from the mountains, to the sea.

So it came as some surprise to me when I discovered that lakes exist in the northern tablelands, more than 1000 meters above sea level.

These naturally occurring lakes bring a vital source of water and refuge to a wide variety of birds. Dangar's Lagoon, pictured here, provides a habitat for more than 100 species.

When you've been driving through sheep and cattle country for half an hour or more, these lakes appear like an oasis.
